What is The Project? | The Black and White Project
Booray HeadshotMy name is Booray Perry and I'm a professional photographer. I own over six different cameras, everything from DSLR's that cost thousands of dollars to the camera in my cellphone. I take a lot of pictures, both professionally and for fun. Recently, while standing around waiting for a client to arrive at a location shoot, I was playing with my personal camera, a FUJI x100s. One of the settings on the camera is "monochrome," otherwise known as "black and white." I'm not sure why that setting exists. Why would you shoot in monochrome when you can shoot in color and convert the image after the fact? Why sentence your image to monochrome for life? How about: For the fun of it? I switched my camera to black and white and started taking pictures. Immediately I started thinking differently. I shoot in color all the time with the intention of converting to black and white but shooting in black and white to start is different. It reminded me of my days as a high school photographer, taking pictures with a roll of black and white film. Then I took it a step further: What if I had to shoot in black and white and what if I could only take one picture? How would that affect my thinking? What would I capture? The more I thought about it, the more I liked it. What if I started shooting black and white for fun and limiting my exposures? Could I still tell a story? Would the images have more meaning when there were just a few? How might it influence my professional work...  the way I shoot when working a wedding or other session? There is a generation of photographers working today who have never shot with black and white film. I wonder if there is something we are missing... some skill or talent that we are not awakening in ourselves by never being forced to really think through a shot before we take it. I was looking at some old pictures from my childhood today and was blown away by the scarcity of pictures. There are pictures my parents shot of my birthday where they took one picture. One picture! On your child's birthday! Can you imagine?! So, "The Black and White Project" was born. I'm hoping to fill this website with black and white images. I'll create little challenges for myself, little games to play so I can see what I come up with. I'll shy away from using my work camera and try to use my personal camera, which has no zoom, so I'll be more like the photographers back in the day, roaming the world with a 24 exposure roll of film and a fixed lens Leica. Also, no Photoshop. I'll try to only do to my images what you might do in a darkroom. That means using the limited tools in Adobe Bridge. I know that there were people who spent hours in the darkroom working on prints but I don't want to do that. It's too much like work. I'll try to stick with just a few tweeks to contrast, exposure, etc. I can't promise that everything here will be the same quality as the work I show on my professional website but I can promise that I'll be having fun... and maybe learning something about my art and myself in the process.
